Cockatiels

Today we focus on cute Cockatiels, the popular bird in the Parrot Zone.

オカメ1
Happy(right, female) and Lucky(left, female) the Cockatiel(Nymphicus hollandicus).

Cockatiel ranges all over Australia and feeds on grass seeds, grains and fruits. It has red spot on the cheek.

Happy and Lucky hatched out in the Garden on December 2006. They have been reared by us the bird staff shortly after they hatced out, so they are very tame and amiable.

This is Namichan, a male.
オカメ2
Contrary to Happy and Lucky, Namichan is a very nervous bird.

You can feed parrots in the Garden after you pay 100 yen but, to our regret, the cockatiels pay little attention to the food.

オカメ3
Even when you show a dice of apple on your finger to the cockatiel,

オカメ4
somehow it leans its head, ignoring the apple.
What does this behaviour mean?

オカメ5
It is begging you to pat it on its head.
Happy and Lucky love to be patted on their head. While you do, they look happier than during their meal.

If you find a Cockatiel with its head leant in the Parrot Zone in Kobe Kachoen,
オカメ6
it's a sign that it wants to have its head patted. Please try it.

However, if you make a similar move towards Namichan,
オカメ7

you'll be sure to be rejected strictly, as you can see on above picture.
