Call Ducks Brooding Now

Today we start the issue by having a look at the inside of one of the roosts that were installed on the island of Outer Waterfowl Pond.....

ユキミ小屋
There's something in it!

ユキミ小屋2
It's a female white Call Duck. She is brooding now.

ユキミ小屋真上
A shot from above, with the roof of the roost removed. When a duck sits on its eggs, it gets tough in order to protect the eggs, and it hardly gets frightened by a camera.
The duck in this piture has 6 to 8 eggs under her body and wings.

コールメス真上
This is another female Call Duck of Mallard-like colouration.
She's also brooding.

Next, let's have a careful look at what the ducks use for their nests.

コール小屋隅
Close up of materials of the nest of the Mallard-coloured female. You can see something grayish and fluffy among wood shavings.

Let's have a closer look.....
巣材2巣材
The upper picture shows the materials of an empty roost. They are pure wood shavings.
The materials in the lower picture is of a roost with a duck sitting on the eggs. For sure, something fluffy are among shavings.

In fact, these are feathers of the duck in the roost. When a duck starts brooding, it pulls the feathers of its chest for the nest. This behaviour is a good sign to the staff member to find out that the duck has laid eggs.

Waterfowls in the Outer Waterfowl Pond of Kobe Kachoen started brooding one after another recently. If everything goes all right, we can show you some baby birds by the latter half of April. We'll feature them on this weblog when some hatch out, so please keep checking out here.

And, here's another one who is looking for the hatch.....

コール
Koru the Call Duck; I can't wait to see my brothers and sisters! Please visit the Garden to see them and of course, me!
