Courtyard in Spring

As it gets warmer gradually, trees in the islet in the Courtyard Pond start blooming.

Here are flowers of Almonds. They resemble Cherry or Peach at a closer look, but overall view reveals that the tree bears flowers at different positions of the branches from Cherry. The fruits ripen from May to July, and they are eaten by birds.

Great Change in the Courtyard Pond

The high handrail between the Courtyard Pond and the path has been a great obstacle to communication with birds for little children.

CIMG0452.jpg

An old carpenter and staff members in charge of the Courtyard improved the handrail.

The handrail was improved lower, and that made the bird handling easier.

But folks, please be careful not to get too excited to stumble down into the pond.....

Southern Lobby in Summer

On this article we show you some views of the Southern Lobby.

Summer is a hard season for the plants in the Garden, but the floor looks as gorgeous as other seasons.

The main feature of the Garden is the immense number of hanging baskets of plants.
We are always happy to see the visitors surprised at the sight.

Japanese Bayberry Trees in the Courtyard

Today we focus on a kind of trees planted on the island in the Courtyard Pond.

They are Japanese Bayberry.

CIMG0361.jpg

Berries of Japanese Bayberry ripen in June to July. Sweet and sour berries are eaten raw, cooked into jam, and soaked in liquor.

CIMG0358.jpg

And the birds in the island want the berry;they hang around under the trees and wait for the berries to drop from the branch. Some naughty ones kick the tree trunk to drop the berries.

CIMG0378.jpg

CIMG0373.jpg

CIMG0374.jpg

They all look happy to eat the berries.

Faeces of the birds that eat the berries contain much seeds.
The seeds of Japanese Bayberry germinate after the berries are eaten and digested by birds. So if you leave the faeces on the ground, you may be able to see some seedlings. In real, however, the faeces are wiped off immediately in the Garden anyway.....

When you visit the Courtyard, please don't miss the birds eating berries with their bills dyed red.

Spring Flowers in the Courtyard

Though early April is the best season to see cherry blossom usually, cherry trees has just started unfolding their flowers in Hyogo Prefecture this year due to unusually cold wave that hit Japan several times recently.

Speaking of flowers, Kobe Kachoen keeps a huge number of flowers in full bloom all the year round in the Greenhouse. However, you can see some flowers in the Courtyard from season to season.

On this issue of weblog, we focus on flowers in the Courtyard in spring.

花
First to show you is a kinf of camellia.

白
Next one is a white camellia, or a cultivar of sasanqua(Camellia sasanqua).

赤
Next one with red flowers might be Kantsubaki, a hybrid between C. japonica and C. sasanqua.

This one with pink flowers reminds me of cherry blossom.

あせび
Next flower is pieris.
Though pieris trees are very short and inconspicuous, they bear many cute white flowers.

木
This is a tree of bayberry.
Flowers of bayberry. They are not so beautiful.
Anyway, as we see many flowers, we might be able to harvest a good amount of bayberry this year.

The last tree to show you is pomegranate.
Above picture is of a tree of pomegrenate, with its leaves dropped off completely. But.....
.....now that it's spring, the tree bears buds here and there. I'm pretty sure that this tree has many flowers and sets many fruits this year.

島の花
Cherry blossom is not the only show of spring. Please don't miss to see the flowers of Courtyard pond as well as flowers in the Greenhouse when you visit Kobe Kachoen.
